Why conservation planning needs socioeconomic data.

چکیده
O ver the past century, human population has expanded rapidly, much to the detriment of many other species that coinhabit the earth. There are roughly four times as many people alive now as there were in 1900. Economic activity has increased even more rapidly than population as evidenced by rising standards of living in most parts of the world. The vast expansion of human activity has led to widespread conversion of natural habitat, the spread of exotic invasive species, changes in nutrient f lows, pollution, climate change, and overharvesting. The combined effect of these impacts has put many species at risk of extinction. Projections for continued human population growth and further economic expansion will further increase the risks to biodiversity.

Poverty, perceptions and planning: why socioeconomics matter in the management
This paper examines relationships between socioeconomic factors and perceptions of coastal resources in Mahahual, Mexico. Residents provided open-ended comments to questions regarding coral reefs and fisheries. Socioeconomic characteristics are examined to see if there are differences in perceptions between socioeconomic groups. We found that wealth is the most important socioeconomic variable ...

A strategy with contemporary salience arises in intensive, sedentarized agriculture that can protect forests and enhance livelihoods for forest dwellers. This paper investigates why intensive agriculture does not limit deforestation in southeastern Mexico’s Calakmul ...
متن کاملStriking a balance between biodiversity conservation and socioeconomic viability in the design of marine protected areas.
The establishment of marine protected areas is often viewed as a conflict between conservation and fishing. We considered consumptive and nonconsumptive interests of multiple stakeholders (i.e., fishers, scuba divers, conservationists, managers, scientists) in the systematic design of a network of marine protected areas along California's central coast in the context of the Marine Life Protecti...
متن کاملSympathy for the Devil: Detailing the Effects of Planning-Unit Size, Thematic Resolution of Reef Classes, and Socioeconomic Costs on Spatial Priorities for Marine Conservation
Spatial data characteristics have the potential to influence various aspects of prioritising biodiversity areas for systematic conservation planning. There has been some exploration of the combined effects of size of planning units and level of classification of physical environments on the pattern and extent of priority areas. However, these data characteristics have yet to be explicitly inves...
متن کاملA quantitative analysis on the effects of critical factors limiting the effectiveness of species conservation in future time
The effectiveness of conservation plans depends on environmental, ecological, and socioeconomic factors. Global change makes conservation decisions even more challenging. Among others, the components of most concern in modern-day conservation assessments are as follows: the magnitude of climate and land-use changes; species dispersal abilities; competition with harmful socioeconomic activities ...
